Look, I get it. When someone first mentioned "fishing drones" to me, I rolled my eyes so hard I almost saw my brain. Another gimmick? Another expensive toy that'll collect dust in the garage next to that ab roller from 2019?

But then I actually watched one in action. And honestly? It kind of blew my mind.

What Even Is a Fishing Drone?

So here's the deal — a fishing drone is basically a regular drone that's been beefed up to carry your bait and drop it wherever you want. We're talking 500, 800, sometimes over 1000 meters out. From the shore. Without a boat.

Let that sink in for a second.

You're standing on the beach, and you can drop your line in the same spots that guys with $50,000 boats are fishing. That's... actually pretty wild when you think about it.

Who Actually Needs One of These?

Real talk — this isn't for everyone. If you're happy casting from the pier and catching whatever bites, more power to you. Nothing wrong with that.

But if you've ever stood on a beach watching fish break the surface just out of casting range, you know that specific frustration. It's maddening. The fish are right there, taunting you, and your arm just can't throw that far.

Fishing drones solve that problem. Period.

They're also huge for:

  • Surf fishing — get past the breakers without getting soaked
  • Kayak fishing — scout ahead without paddling forever
  • Lake fishing — reach those deep pockets from shore
  • Carp fishing — UK and European anglers have been using these for years

The Xpece ONE: Why It's Different

Most "fishing drones" are just regular camera drones with a release mechanism slapped on. They work, kind of, but they weren't designed for this.

The Xpece ONE was built specifically for fishing. What does that mean in practice?

It floats. Yeah. If it goes down (wind gust, pilot error, whatever), it doesn't sink to the bottom and become a very expensive artificial reef. It just... floats there until you retrieve it. That alone is worth the price difference from regular drones.

The release mechanism actually works. Some cheaper options have this annoying habit of dropping your bait at random times. Nothing like watching your $15 worth of bait plop into the water 50 feet from shore because the mechanism glitched.

Battery life makes sense. You get enough flight time to actually do something useful, not just hover for 8 minutes and panic-fly back.

But Is It Cheating?

I hear this one a lot. "That's not real fishing."

Here's my take: the drone delivers your bait. That's it. You still have to find the fish. You still have to set the hook. You still have to fight and land whatever you catch.

Is using a fish finder cheating? Is using a boat cheating? Where exactly do we draw this line?

Personally, I think anything that gets more people outside and fishing is a good thing. If a drone helps someone catch their first tuna from shore, that's awesome. They'll remember that forever.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me

A few things I learned the hard way:

Practice without bait first. Seriously. Get comfortable flying, practice the release mechanism, learn how the wind affects things. Don't learn all this with your expensive rig attached.

Check local regulations. Some beaches and parks have drone restrictions. Some fishing spots don't allow them. Do your homework first so you don't get a ticket or, worse, have your drone confiscated.

Wind is not your friend. Anything over 15-20 mph and you're gonna have a bad time. The drone can handle more than that, but accuracy goes out the window.

Keep spare batteries. You'll want to make multiple drops, especially when you're figuring out where the fish are. One battery won't cut it.

The Bottom Line

Is a fishing drone a necessity? No. You can absolutely catch fish without one.

Is it a game-changer for certain situations? Absolutely yes.

If you're the kind of person who's always looking for an edge, who gets frustrated when fish are just out of reach, who wants to fish spots that would otherwise require a boat — it's worth serious consideration.

I went from skeptic to believer pretty quick. Maybe you will too.
