Red light therapy is everywhere right now. Celebrities swear by it. Biohackers won't shut up about it. Your friend who does CrossFit probably has a panel in their garage.

But here's my problem with most red light therapy content online: it's either written by companies trying to sell you something, or by people who've clearly never actually used these devices.

I've been using red light therapy for over a year. Let me tell you what I've actually learned — the good, the bad, and the stuff nobody talks about.

First, What Even Is Red Light Therapy?

The fancy scientific term is "photobiomodulation." Try saying that three times fast.

Muscle recovery: This is the most obvious one. Using red light on sore muscles after workouts noticeably reduces how long I'm sore. Not eliminates — reduces. It's not magic, but it helps.

Sleep: Using red light in the evening (instead of harsh blue light from screens) seems to help with sleep quality. The science here is about melatonin production — red light doesn't suppress it like blue light does.

Consistency beats intensity. 10 minutes daily beats 30 minutes twice a week. Your cells need regular stimulation.

Closer is better. Light intensity drops rapidly with distance. Most devices work best at 6-12 inches from the skin. Further away and you're wasting time.

Timing matters (sometimes). For sleep benefits, use it in the evening. For workout recovery, use it within a few hours of exercise. For skin, consistency matters more than timing.

Don't overcomplicate it. Some people get obsessive about exact protocols. Just use the thing regularly and you'll see results. It's not that complicated.

The Bottom Line

Red light therapy is legit. The science is there. The mechanism is understood. It's not a miracle cure, but it's a useful tool for recovery, skin health, and general wellness.

The catch is that you need a device that actually delivers therapeutic doses. Most of the cheap stuff doesn't.

Worst case? You've got a nice warm light to relax with in the evenings. Not the worst outcome.
